Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser al-Misned is a modern stylistic icon, influential intellectual and tireless activist.
The 58-year-old lady is one of the three wives of the former Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, and the mother of seven of her children, including Qatar’s current emir, Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani. Although her husband has abandoned the throne in the interest of her son, sheik Moza remains a trademark of Qatar and one of the most influential women in the Middle East and the world.
Sheikha Mozah is just as actively involved and influential on the political scene as her husband and son. She says she does not lack the status of Qatar’s first lady because she enjoys more work as a social activist. Indeed, Moza’s activism impresses all who are familiar with her story, and foreign diplomats are amazed by her power and intelligence.
In 2007, she ranks 79th on the Forbes list of the 100 most influential women in the world, and in 2015 she is listed as the best-dressed woman in the world by Vanity Fair magazine. After joining Sheikh Moza on the Forbes list, her actuality only increased, and introduced the world not only to the glamorous lady standing next to Sheikha, but also as a powerful social and political figure.
Her daring initiatives are aimed at improving the situation of women in the Middle East, eradicating domestic violence, facilitating uninterrupted education and protecting the rights of children and women.
Moza bin Nasser was born in 1959 and is the daughter of a businessman from whom she inherited the love of education. According to her, education should be appreciated and everyone should have free access to it. She started her education in Egypt. Although she wanted to be a doctor, she decided for sociology. She graduated from the Department of Sociology at the University of Qatar. After completing the studies, she decided that learning should not stop at any stage of life.
Since then, her work has begun on the plan of modernizing the education system in Qatar. In 1995, Moza and her husband founded the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Social Development, which has been active until today. The Moza Foundation is credited with the opening of US universities in the territory of Qatar through the so-called ” program “City of Education”. With this program, over 14 million square meters were used to build student campuses, university buildings and institutes. The program also provides funds intended for scientific research, as well as for other economic and social projects.
Moza is also the creator of several programs to improve the health care system in Qatar. She is currently the head of the Sidra Medical and Research Center’s medical and research center, which is on track to become a leading institution specializing in the health of women and children. Sheikh Mosa is also credited with creating more employment programs for young people in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as helping marginalized communities and the poor.
She has magistrate in the Department of Islamics at the University of Qatar and has been awarded with five honorary doctorates from world universities. She is also a holder of several prestigious awards in honor of her philanthropy and merit in improving international relations.
Beside being Mozah world-renowned intellectual and active on the world’s political scene, her original and impeccable style remains unnoticed. Her stylish choices are as brave as her social engagement. She partly breaks the Islamic tradition that requires the wearing of a hijab, but the stylized turbans, from which a part of her hair is still visible, become her recognizable sign.She is also known for her lavish dresses, most in vibrant and striking colors, but also in the frequent appearance of trousers, which is also unacceptable in the Islamic world.
